Parker went to a Colorado college on a baseball scholarship, but left after freshman year to move back to Arizona and become a firefighter like his father, Wade, who had just retired as a captain in the Chino Valley district. Wade Parker grew up in Chino Valley, north of Prescott, with dreams of being either a firefighter of a baseball player. He would impress his friends with his ability to impersonate the hissing and grunting sounds of a velociraptor. He was described as a history buff and as someone who had a passion for learning new languages and cultures. Scott Norris grew up in Prescott Valley and had been on the Granite Mountain squad for five years. She succeeded in advocating for the park to be “raw and rough,” the hike replicating somewhat the experience of being a wildland firefighter. His mother, Deborah Pfingston, was on the committee that created the state park memorializing the crew. His wife, Juliann, joined with another hotshot widow to form a non-profit group that advocates for wildland firefighter safety. At a father-daughter dance at her school during the next year, his daughter, Shiloh, danced with a picture of her father. The caption under his yearbook photo said: “I have decided to live forever or die in the attempt.” Alex Russell as Andrew AshcraftĪndrew Ashcraft left behind a wife and four children. And, according to the owner of a Prescott gym where the crew worked out, was the goofiest of the bunch, always joking around. On the afternoon of the fire, he took pictures and video that investigators used to help determine what happened. Steed had been a Marine and was the crew's workout leader. On the day of the fire, he was running the team while Marsh worked as a supervisor of the area. ![]() Jesse Steed was the captain of the hotshots, second in command to Marsh. He narrowly escaped the flames himself, getting picked up by another hotshot crew that happened to pass by. He spotted the wind shift and radioed about it with his fellow crew members, telling them he was also moving locations. McDonough was assigned to be the lookout for the crew. Around the firehouse, Marsh was "Papa," the old man who worried about his boys. Marsh had led the hotshots since the team first became a nationwide firefighting crew in 2008.
